Bruce Springsteen to headline Isle of Wight Festival

The organisers of the Isle of Wight Festival have revealed that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are to headline next year's event.

They are the first act to have been revealed as performing at the island-based bash and will bring it to a close on June 24th.

It will be only the third time Springsteen has performed at a UK festival to date, which is sure to make Isle of Wight Festival tickets extremely popular in the coming weeks and months.

Springsteen has also revealed he will be performing at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, with more tour dates perhaps to be announced in the next few days.

But the Isle of Wight Festival is likely to be the biggest gig he plays in the UK and his fans could be looking into breaks on the island to coincide with the event in order to see the star live.

Tracks such as Born to Run and Thunder Road are likely to be showcased by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in the show, while the closing slot of the festival may mean he is given an extended set to play even more of his classic material.

Springsteen has sold more than 65 million records over the course of his career in the US alone, making him one of the biggest-selling acts in history and a major draw for UK festival crowds.

Promoter of the Isle of Wight Festival John Giddings said: "It's taken years to get him here, but it will have been worth the wait - he is one of the greatest acts of all time, it's going to be a classic year..."

It may be the case that Giddings is hinting about some of the other bands he is looking to approach to play at the Isle of Wight Festival next year, with his use of the word classic perhaps to be taken by fans to mean newer acts are not being considered for headline status.

The Stone Roses may be one band in the running to perform at the Isle of Wight Festival after the Manchester group announced they were reforming for gigs next summer.

They sold out three massive homecoming shows at Heaton Park in little over an hour and confirmed they will be heading out on a world tour, but it is not yet known whether or not they will be playing on the island, either at Bestival or the Isle of Wight Festival.

Fans took to social networking sites such as Twitter to share their joy about the news Springsteen is going to be performing on the Isle of Wight next year.

Fran Trotter said: "Get me to the @IsleOfWightFest already. Going to be A-Mazing!!"

Meanwhile, more than a hundred people have already liked the announcement of the Springsteen news on the official Facebook page for the Isle of Wight Festival.

Luke Wicks posted: "Saw him at Glastonbury, not really knowing much of his stuff and blown away!"

Tracey Robinson added: "Great news - a true legend! He's a fantastic live performer with tons of energy & an amazing catalogue of classic tunes. Love it!"

Springsteen has collected a vast number of prizes during his lengthy career in the music industry, including 20 Grammy Awards, two Golden Globes and an Academy Award.

Next year, the Isle of Wight Festival will take place over the course of a different weekend to usual, after it was moved by the organisers to avoid a clash with the celebrations for the Queen's Jubilee, with the monarch marking 60 years on the throne.
