Bids made for Isle of Wight Festival

The Isle of Wight Festival may have a new organiser next year, after curator John Giddings revealed he has received a number of bids to buy the event.

According to a report by the Sunday Telegraph, the largest of these was at around £12 million, but has been rebuffed by Mr Giddings, who stated he is focusing on making the 2012 festival as good as possible at the moment.

He pointed out he is an obvious target for would-be buyers of music events in the UK, due to the fact it is one of the only major independent festivals in the country.

"It's very personal. I'd never say never and I'm flattered that people have come to me," Mr Giddings said, while it was claimed the event makes as much as £2 million profit a year.

He explained when he first floated the idea of resuming the Isle of Wight Festival - which was one of the most famous events of its type in the 1960s - he struggled to raise any interest in it.

"I went down to have a look for a laugh and a good day out but when I got there I suddenly remembered I had been there with Jim Morrison," Mr Giddings told the newspaper.

He recalled 600,000 people being on the Isle of Wight for the bash and decided he wanted to resurrect the festival, which is being headlined by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Pearl Jam and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers this summer.

Mr Giddings argued festivals are more enjoyable than they were a few decades ago, due to the fact they are a lot safer and can therefore be enjoyed by families.

Acts playing at the 2012 Isle of Wight Festival include Jessie J, Example, Elbow, The Vaccines, Tinie Tempah, Biffy Clyro and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.
