Walk the Wight 'has inspirational stories'

Isle of Wight holidays could be booked by rambling enthusiasts who want to have a go at the Walk the Wight challenge that is set to take place on the island this summer.

Postal registration for the event comes to an end on Friday (May 4th), so those who want to be involved will have to move quickly if they are to secure a place.

But for those who can sign up online, there is a later deadline of midnight on May 7th to give them a little extra time to confirm their appearance at the challenge.

Close to 10,000 people have already signed up to take part in the Walk the Wight event, with money raised from the trek going to the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

Ben Rust from the hospice told the Isle of Wight County Press that Walk the Wight brings out the best in the Isle of Wight's community and stated there are a number of inspirational stories around it.

"We are so proud of the event and humbled by the support it receives. We love everything about the walk, from the inspirational stories behind those choosing to walk, overcoming adversity and fulfilling personal challenges to the outlandish and downright odd ideas that some of you come up with," he was quoted as saying by the news provider.

Mr Rust added that it would not be possible to continue to provide the same level of care at the hospice were it not for events such as the 26.5-mile Walk the Wight challenge.

Last year, some £310,000 was raised for the hospice by walkers who ranged in age from nine to 84, with the 2012 event taking place on May 13th.

Lord Michael Grade of Yarmouth has been confirmed as being on hand to give out medals at the finish line to those who complete the challenge.
