Ships race and marathon bring sporty feel to Isle of Wight this weekend

Sports fans may well already have an Isle of Wight holiday on their to-do list, as the island boasts an intriguing landscape that lends itself to many activities.

Of course, one of the most notable features of the Isle of Wight is its many miles of coastline, making watersports particularly popular. Any pursuit that involves the sea or sand will go down well and it is a reasonably safe bet that it is widely practiced on the island.

However, rarely do two prestigious events come together to form what some sports enthusiasts might see as a dream weekend. Exactly that is on the cards at the end of this week though, when a ships race and a marathon are due to be held on consecutive days.

The Isle of Wight Council has marked both occasions as major events in its calendar and said Sunday's (October 7th) marathon will be the 56th time the race has been completed in the region. That makes it one of the longest-running events of its type in the UK and so it should be a suitably glamorous time to be by the Solent.

A day earlier, it will be the turn of water enthusiasts as they take their boats to the sea for a thrilling race. The ASTO Small Ships Race is held every autumn and sees competitors sail from Cowes Yacht Haven.

Some of the entrants in that event are as young as 12, proving fun on the Isle of Wight is available to people of all ages.

While it might be a bit too late for people around the UK to take part in either of the contests this weekend, they could still book an Isle of Wight holiday for an exciting viewing experience. And if they like what they see, they might just be back next year to have a go themselves.
