Sandi Toksvig and Aled Jones to perform on Isle of Wight

The organisers of a major event being held on the Isle of Wight have revealed the first batch of names to be appearing at the bash.

Comic Sandi Toksvig is among those who will be heading to the Isle of Wight to showcase their talents at the 2012 Isle of Arts event, which is taking place from April 20th and 22nd.

She will be joined by singer Aled Jones, who shot to fame as a child star for his version of Walking in the Air and has gone on to become a sensation in the years since.

Toksvig, a writer and presenter of Radio 4's The News Quiz, will be hosting a special evening in the festival marquee at Salisbury Gardens on the Saturday evening, with attendees to enjoy a night of sparkling wit and wry observations from the performer.

The presenter will be known to viewers of QI, Have I Got News For You, Time Team and has also written a number of books, including The Littlest Viking and Hitler's Canary.

Aled Jones has been named as the headline act of the festival marquee for the closing evening of the Isle of Arts event this year and he will be introducing an evening of choral music.

He will be signing himself on the night as a guest performer along with the Newchurch Male Voice Choir from the Isle of Wight and the Hart Male Voice Choir from Hampshire.

The Newchurch choir has earned a growing fanbase over the course of the last few years and has performed at events such as Bestival and venues including Winchester Cathedral.

Roy Bevan will be leading the choir on the night and the singers will be supported by accompanist Jenny Riddell for the show.

"They have a varied musical repertoire, ranging from traditional male voice pieces, songs from the swing era, musical theatre and pop," noted the Isle of Arts organisers.

After rising to fame as a result of his version of Walking in the Air, which featured in The Snowman, Jones took some time off from the industry to focus on his studies before returning to land the major role of Joseph in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in the West End of London.

He has sold more than six million copies of his 27 albums to date and is one of the biggest opera stars the UK has ever produced, which may persuade fans of this type of music to book Isle of Wight holidays in order to see him perform live at the Isle of Arts event.

Hardeep Singh Kohli is another of the major stars to have been confirmed on the bill for the showcase and he will be bringing his new show - The Nearly-Naked Chef - to the island.

The broadcaster, raconteur, writer and cook will be holding an event that combines comedy with inventive cuisine on the final afternoon of the weekend.

Critics have already praised the show, with the Times noting: "Kohli's evening of cookery and anecdotes ... left a reassuringly warm aftertaste."

Mississippi blues act Tipitina will also be heading to the Isle of Wight to perform at the Isle of Arts bash, with the trio completing the line-up for the opening night.

The Preston-based band will be bringing their New Orleans-influenced sound to the Isle of Wight for what is sure to be one of the highlights of the weekend's entertainment.

Saxophonist John Helliwell, best known to fans of the group Supertramp, will be performing on the Saturday night of the Isle of Arts event with his new band Creme Anglais.

The star has assembled musicians such as Geth Griffin and John Ellis for the venture.

Tickets are not yet on sale, but details are set to be revealed shortly.
