Radio stars lead the way at Isle of Wight triathlon

Visitors to the Isle of Wight last weekend will have watched on as people from around the country tackled the region's latest triathlon.

The West Wight Triathlon was held on Sunday (September 30th) and included the usual elements of swimming, cycling and running. Among the field were Isle of Wight Radio stars Paul Topping, Heather McCallum and Graeme Craig, who decided to join their fellow competitors for charity.

Each of the elements - the 600-metre swim, a 35km bike ride and the 7.5km run - were taken on by the broadcasters, who were raising money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. They appealed to listeners and locals for money and their total could be announced in due course.

But for other people who would love the chance to have a go at the triathlon, the opportunity might not be dead. While they have obviously missed this year's event and will have to wait another 51 weeks for it to come back around, they could find the island's landscape allows them to complete the challenge on their own terms.

In other words, why not book an Isle of Wight holiday and take on its cycling routes, running trails and waters right now?

The Solent surrounds the Isle of Wight and could provide the perfect spot for a swimming expedition, while the island's lush countryside will offer a beautiful backdrop to any running or cycling Britons wish to indulge themselves in.

There is certainly a sporty feel to the Isle of Wight right now, with the destination due to host its annual marathon this weekend. Many more people are expected to head to the holiday hotspot with their trainers and running shorts for a 26-mile dash around its scenic land.

Such events could well help to confirm its status as a top holiday destination for active Britons who want to improve their fitness on their next break.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801463713-ADNFCR
