Isle of Wight to host Westward Cup

Sailing fans could be tempted to book Isle of Wight holidays after it was announced the island is set to host superyachts in the Westward Cup this year.

Altair, Eleonora, Mariette and Mariquita have been confirmed as the Big Class vessels that will be travelling to the Isle of Wight to take part in the event.

The spectacle is set to take place around the Isle of Wight from June 11th to 16th and is likely to attract hundreds of people to the island.

It is possible a Round the Island race will also be held over the course of the Westward Cup, but this is yet to be confirmed by the organisers of the regatta.

The Royal Yacht Squadron, the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) and the New York Yacht Club have come together in order to put the event on and it is sure to be one of the stand-outs on the Isle of Wight's sporting calendar this summer.

A statement released by the bodies revealed they are hoping to return to the racing of the 1920s and the 1930s with the Westward and the Big Class yachts on the island.

Most of the sailing is set to take place in the Solent, so anyone booking Isle of Wight holidays to coincide with the Westward Cup is sure to get a great view of the action, which will take place just a few miles away from the shore.

The regatta is likely to whet the appetite for sailing racing off the coast of the island for later in the summer when the annual Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week event is held.

This year, it is set to run from August 11th to 18th, with the highlight likely to be the spectacle of the Round the Island Race that draws hundreds of sailors to the island to compete.
