Isle of Wight to host Remembrance Sunday events

Events will be held across the Isle of Wight next month to mark Remembrance Sunday.

On November 11th a service of remembrance will take place in Newport to mark the sacrifice made by British Armed Forces in the two world wars and other conflicts around the world.

The Isle of Wight Council's mace bearer will lead a procession from the Guildhall to St Thomas' Square at 10:50 GMT, where prayers will be followed by a two-minute silence at 11:00 GMT.

Once the silence has been completed, wreaths will be laid in the square, before a service of remembrance takes place in Newport Minster.

Newport is not the only part of the island to be hosting events to mark Remembrance Sunday, as Carisbrooke Castle, located just outside the town, is the venue for a special Field of Remembrance .

The field was first launched two years ago by lord-lieutenant of the Isle of Wight major general Martin White and is returning for another year after proving popular with residents, who can use it as a place to pay their respects to servicemen and women who have died in conflict.

Locals and visitors can purchase crosses to place in the field from the castle's shop, with all proceeds going to the Royal British Legion. The field will be open between 10:00 and 13:00 GMT on November 8th and between 10:00 and 16:00 GMT on November 10th and 11th.

The castle, which is best known as the place where King Charles I was kept prisoner and is one of the Isle of Wight's best-known tourist attractions, is also hosting a formal service of remembrance, which will take place on November 8th at 10:45 GMT.

After attending the service of visiting the Field of Remembrance, tourists can explore the chapel and museum - home to various pieces of Charles I memorabilia - or the new Princess Beatrice Garden, which has been put together by TV presenter and garden designer Chris Beardshaw.
