Isle of Wight starts planning Diamond Jubilee celebrations

Isle of Wight holidays could be set for a boost in popularity next summer as the island has started making preparations for celebrations to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The monarch will have been on the throne for 60 years and the Isle of Wight Council is asking for suggestions for what it can do to mark the occasion on the island.

Chairman of the Diamond Jubilee Organising Committee councillor David Williams stated that he is sure people on the Isle of Wight will want to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in style.

Isle of Wight holidays are likely to be popular among those who want to take advantage of the fact they will be given a day off work to mark the occasion.

"The extended bank holiday weekend provides plenty of opportunity for communities to come together and mark the Queen's 60-year reign," commented Mr Williams.

"If you would like to share your event with others, please get in touch with us so we can add your event to the Jubilee website."

The first weekend in June has been chosen in order to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and people will get a special extended weekend to do so.

May's late bank holiday weekend has been moved a week so it does not clash with the festivities, while Tuesday June 5th has been selected as the Jubilee day off.

This means families could be set for a four-day Isle of Wight holiday and the island could be the perfect place to head to for a short break at this time of the year.

The Isle of Wight Festival has already been moved so that it does not take place at the same time as the celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee and will now be held from June 22nd to 24th.

Festival organiser John Giddings stated that the decision was made in order to help the island's infrastructure to cope with extra visitors to the Isle of Wight.
