Isle of Wight sandcastle-building event was brilliant

A recent charity event held on the Isle of Wight has been described as being a brilliant success by its organiser.

Sharon Corr decided to stage a sandcastle-building contest on the island in aid of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice after it helped to look after her brother Bill, who was suffering from cancer.

More than 200 people turned up to Ryde's Appley beach to dig in and battle for the prestigious 'King of the Castle' title, reports the Isle of Wight County Press.

Ms Corr told the news provider that the event was Bill's idea as the family usually heads to the beach to build sandcastles on Boxing Day.

"We set about organising an event with the hospice fundraising team, publicising it on Facebook and the hospice website," she said.

"It was a brilliant event and one we are hoping to repeat."

Appley beach is one of the most popular tourist attractions for those on Isle of Wight holidays, due to its long stretches of white sand.
