Isle of Wight reveals Olympic Torch plan

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays this month may get the chance to see the Olympic Torch in some of the country's most iconic locations during their time on the island.

The torch is expected to land on the Isle of Wight early in the afternoon on July 14th, with a flotilla of boats set to welcome it as it arrives on the ferry from the mainland.

It will then be taken to The Needles Park, where a special sports-themed day of celebration is being held in order to mark the torch's presence on the Isle of Wight.

Pupils at Yarmouth Primary School will then welcome the flame into the town with a large banner, with a funfair scheduled to take place as well.

Torchbearers will run through Carisbrooke High Street into Newport town centre in what is sure to be one of the best places on the Isle of Wight to see the iconic item.

A children's carnival and a fun day is set to take place in Newport to mark the arrival of the torch, with thousands of people likely to line the streets to see the flame.

"The final leg of the journey for the torch will see it visit Osborne House in East Cowes where the BBC's Blue Peter Big Olympic Tour road show will be based which will include a live broadcast in the morning," noted the Isle of Wight Council.

At 16:30 BST, the torch will complete its time on the Isle of Wight by sailing back to the mainland via a Red Funnel ferry crossing.

The vessel that has been picked to transport the flame has been kitted out with a large Union Flag on the side in order to mark the occasion.

Sporting action will get underway in London later this month, with the Olympic Games set to run from July 27th to August 12th.
