Isle of Wight prepares for Jubilee celebrations

The Isle of Wight is getting ready to host a series of special celebrations held in order to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.

It is 60 years since the monarch ascended to the throne and she will be travelling to the Isle of Wight with husband Prince Philip as part of a full UK tour this year.

Public spaces close to Shanklin Chine have therefore been spruced up so that they are ready to host events to mark the occasion, the Isle of Wight Council has announced.

Co-ordinated by one of the Isle of Wight Council’s environment officers, weeding and planting was carried out by the probation service with funding from Shanklin Chine and discounted materials supplied by Jewson Moreys in Ryde.

One of the main events to be taking place at the location this summer is set to be the Hospice Jubilee Tea Party at Shanklin Chine on June 3rd, with the island benefiting from an improved public space for the community and visitors all year round, even after the Jubilee celebrations are brought to an end this summer.

Chairman of the Isle of Wight Diamond Jubilee Organising Committee councillor David Williams stated it was "wonderful" to see communities on the island come together in order to make sure the area is prepared for the visit of the Queen later in the year.

"The work undertaken by Shanklin Chine with the help of the probation service, local businesses and council officers is of real benefit to the local community, especially with plans for so many events to mark the Diamond Jubilee this June," he said.

Cowes Yacht Haven will be hosting the Boat and Leisure Festival to mark the Diamond Jubilee in a couple of months' time, with the event set to take place on June 4th and 5th.

Festival director James Brooke told the Isle of Wight County Press it is the "perfect" location to hold a British-themed celebration to mark the Jubilee.
