Isle of Wight Needles chairlift 'a fantastic location' for Olympic torch

Isle of Wight holidays may be popular next summer among those who want to see the Olympic torch in an iconic location ahead of the start of the event.

The London Olympic Organising Committee (LOCOG) has named the Alum Bay chairlift, which looks out at the Needles, as one of the top places for the flame to be borne during its trip around the UK next year.

A spokesman for LOCOG told the Isle of Wight County Press that only 20 iconic locations have so far been decided by the committee.

"We have made an initial announcement of just 20 of the best places throughout the UK and the chairlift is certainly included in that. It promises to be a fantastic location," he was quoted as saying by the news provider.

As a result of the Isle of Wight chairlift being included in this shortlist, the Olympic flame's time on the island is set to be filmed and photographed for posterity.

This could increase the number of people heading out on Isle of Wight holidays in order to see the torch for themselves ahead of the start of the Games next summer.

During its time on the island, the flame is set to visit locations such as Gunville, Carisbrooke, Newport and East Cowes after its arrival in Yarmouth on July 14th.

Some 40 people are set to carry the torch while it is on the Isle of Wight and the names of these individuals are yet to be revealed.

The Isle of Wight had been left off the initial route for the Olympic flame when it was originally announced by LOCOG, but this was later revealed to have been because negotiations and planning was still ongoing.

Councillor George Brown, the council's cabinet member for the economy and the environment, stated that the torch coming to the island will prove to be a memorable occasion for locals and those on Isle of Wight holidays.
