Isle of Wight holiday could include Disney performance

Isle of Wight holidays could be popular among families who want to see a performance of a Disney classic during their break away from home.

Shanklin Theatre is set to open its doors for a run of Beauty and the Beast shows, marking the culmination of more than a year of hard work by actors and organisers at the location.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, it is set to be one of the biggest ever amateur performances the island has seen, with a cast of around 30 taking to the stage.

They will be backed each night by 21 professional musicians, with 550 people able to go along to each of the showings of Beauty and the Beast at the theatre.

Andrew Woodford has a growing reputation as one of the most impressive amateur performers on the Isle of Wight and it was his idea to put on a version of the Disney classic.

He will be acting as the director of both the music and the production itself and stated that the whole show has been put together from scratch.

Speaking to the news provider, he said: "It has been fantastic fun. At risk of sounding over confident, I believe everyone is word perfect already and we can’t wait to get on with it."

Woodford told the news provider how the Island Savoyards - the group behind the performance of Beauty and the Beast - had not been sure of what tale to take on next.

But he claimed they have been rejuvenated by the decision to opt for the Disney story and many new members have joined the Savoyards as a result.

Woodford - who is just 25 despite many years of experience of taking to the stage - added that all of those who have taken part in the production of Beauty and the Beast are keen to remain with the group in the future and act in whatever it decides to do next.

Families on Isle of Wight holidays considering going along to one of the shows but worried it will only be appealing to young children were also reassured that this will not be the case.

"The musical style is subtle and complex and the storyline is definitely very operatic. There are big production numbers, with lots of colour and movement and fun but this is a very moving story," said Andrew.
He added that the Beast of the story is a "tortured" and "tragic" figure, with many operatic elements included in his big solo towards the end of the production.

Ticket sales are said to be going well but there are still plenty of passes available for those on Isle of Wight holidays who want to take in one of the performances during their stay.

Woodford added that everyone who is involved in putting on the show has been "captivated" by working on the project and is passionate about making it as good as possible.

"Our members who had not experienced modern musical theatre before have really fallen in love with this production," he told the newspaper.

Shanklin Theatre will be hosting showings of Beauty and the Beast from October 27th to 30th, with matinee productions available for those with young children.

The next big show to be hosted by the venue is set to be just before Christmas, when the curtains open for the annual pantomime.

This year, actors will be dressing up as dames in order to play out the story of Cinderella on the stage for hundreds of people every evening.

Stars including Joe Brown and Gareth Gates are also set to play at the theatre in the coming weeks.
