Duke of Edinburgh to visit Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is preparing to host another royal visitor, with the Duke of Edinburgh set to travel to the island later in the summer.

It is just weeks since Prince Philip was on an Isle of Wight visit with Queen Elizabeth II to mark the monarch's Diamond Jubilee, but he will return to the island on Monday (August 13th).

The Duke has a number of engagements lined up on the Isle of Wight and his visit will coincide with the beginning of the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week regatta.

His trip to the Isle of Wight will include a visit to the County Club in St James' Square and a tour of AJ Wells and Sons' factory and studio on the outskirts of the town of Cowes.

Prince Philip will be sure to find time to catch some top sailing during his break on the Isle of Wight, but will take lunch with members of the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Industry at the County Club.

The royal will be offered the opportunity to view the chamber's mobile health unit which will be parked in St James' Square, noted the Isle of Wight Council, before he travels to AJ Wells and Sons - which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year - for a tour.

It was added by the local authority: "The Duke of Edinburgh will be invited to unveil a plaque to commemorate the visit and presented with a bottle of 'Slow Burner' ale, produced locally to celebrate the company's 40th anniversary."

During the Queen's visit to the Isle of Wight with the Duke of Edinburgh earlier in the summer, the monarch officially opened a Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboat station.

Operations manager for the RNLI Mark Southwell stated it was a big day for the town of Cowes to host the royal couple on the island.
