Details of Isle of Wight Jubilee event revealed

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays this summer may wish to head to a special event taking place on the island to mark the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Queen Elizabeth II herself will be travelling to the Isle of Wight to celebrate the occasion with her husband Prince Philip and Cowes is putting on a special festival.

Cowes Yacht Haven has been revealed as the host venue for the Boat and Leisure Festival, which is to take place on June 4th and 5th and will be free to attend.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, the town has been selected by the organisers of the British Leisure Show to host the two-day extravaganza over the extended Jubilee Bank Holiday this summer, which may encourage people to book breaks on the island as they will be off work.

James Brooke, festival director, stated he is "excited" to be able to mark such a special occasion, adding he is "delighted to be working closely with the Cowes community to make this memorable family event a great success".

Mr Brooke added previous bashes have been organised at the Royal Windsor Racecourse and Earls Court, but given the historic links Cowes on the Isle of Wight has with the monarchy, there was only one place to put on a show to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen's coronation.

"It's a perfect venue for a British-themed event and we're proud Cowes will be one of the most exciting places in the country to be celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee," he said, noting the weekend will be an exciting opportunity to generate additional revenue for companies trading within the marine industry.

Other events taking place on the Isle of Wight this summer to mark the Diamond Jubilee include a plan to have all of the island's bells ringing on the day of the celebrations.
