Date set for rearranged Isle of Wight biking event

The Isle of Wight is set to host a postponed mountain biking event this weekend.

Heavy rain led to the Chevy Chase being put back in April and the six-hour event on a purpose-built mountain-bike trail centre at Cheverton Farm near Shorwell will instead take place on Saturday (June 9th).

Cyclists will work in teams on the day in a Le Mans-style race that will be held until the evening, challenging the endurance of the riders.

Entrants are set to travel to the Isle of Wight from all over the country to take their place on the start blocks for the race.

It acts as a warm-up for the off-road events that are set to be held at Cheverton Farm near Shorwell as part of the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival later in the year.

"The centre is based on private farmland, providing cyclists with challenging rider-built jumps and banked corners, weaving through woodland," said a statement from the Isle of Wight Council, which co-ordinated the event along with bodies including the NHS, Cycle Wight, cycling charity CTC, British Cycling and Natural England.

Isle of Wight Mountain Bike Centre will be open from April to October each year and cyclists who want to use the facility will be asked to pay a subscription to do so.

"Annual permits will cost £20, day permits will be available for just £2, either online or from Wight Mountain's shop in Newport or the office at Cheverton Farm," added the council.

Last month, hundreds of people travelled to the Isle of Wight in order to take part in the first ever Cycle the Wight challenge, which was set up in order to promote the island as a viable holiday destination for those who like to get around on two wheels.

Co-organiser of the event Martin Harrison told the Isle of Wight County Press it was a success.
