Celebrate an early Christmas at Osborne House

Visitors to Royal Osborne on the Isle of Wight next month are being offered the chance to celebrate Christmas as they would have done more than 100 years ago, when Queen Victoria was the famous building's resident.

Osborne House is preparing to open its doors on November 17th and 18th to offer its unique experience. The home was the favourite residence of Queen Victoria and will be decked in some of the seasonal decorations and designs that she is said to have loved.

She spent almost every Christmas at Osborne House after the death of her husband, Prince Albert, in 1861 until she died in 1901. Among the attractions and features of a typical festive season at the house are gilded walnuts, gold waistcoat buttons and decorated bonbons.

The Isle of Wight Council has revealed details of the event and noted that it will be an opportunity for people on Isle of Wight holidays to enjoy an early Christmas celebration. Some may see it as a one-off chance to mark the occasion where one of England's most famous monarchs celebrated Christmas so many times.

Some of the presents given to Queen Victoria in years gone by will be on display at the 2012 event. There may also be a renewal of a tradition to light trees on Christmas Eve when presents were handed out and once again on Christmas Day.

Of course, visitors will not have to restrict themselves to Osborne House. As fascinating as it may be to follow in the footsteps of Queen Victoria, there is still plenty more to do on the Isle of Wight at this time of the year.

For instance, it seems the ideal chance to take to the island's lush countryside and follow walking trails and cycling paths, before retiring to a cosy rural pub or restaurant for some seasonal delights.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801466234-ADNFCR
