Cass Casswell to perform on Isle of Wight

One of the Isle of Wight's most successful musical exports is to perform a show on the island as part of the upcoming Newport Jazz Weekend.

Cass Casswell played at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 - the event that was famously one of the last public appearances of Jimi Hendrix - and will be on stage at the jazz festival this month.

He will take part in two different shows, firstly with the six-piece Allstars at St John's Church in Newport on July 21st, before he accompanies the tenor sax player Jo Fooks and Andy Urquhart on trumpet later on the same day in his Monster Trio, reports the Isle of Wight County Press.

Casswell is sure to be a major draw for those booking Isle of Wight holidays in order to to attend performances being put on for the Newport Jazz Weekend.

This year is the first time the event has been held and the organisers will be hoping the confirmation of Casswell on the bill will help to sell tickets for the festival.

The jazz star helped found the Cornwall Chamber Orchestra and has also taught music in Isle of Wight schools and prisons over the course of his long career in the industry.

He was involved in music even as a youngster, founding The Tornados rock group with fellow pupils Brian Sharpe, Martyn Ford and Keith Robe while he was attending Sandown Grammar School in 1959.

The IW Musicians and Entertainer's Club was also founded by Casswell, while it is thought the audience for his appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 was as big as 250,000 people.

Casswell's Monster Trio play all kinds of jazz, from traditional numbers such as After You've Gone to modern classics including There Will Never Be Another You and Secret Love.
