California's western wilderness documented in new exhibition

When you travel it's always nice to experience new things and if you're visiting the Isle of Wight over April and the start of May, you'll have a chance to expand your horizons far beyond its rugged shores.

That's because the Quay Arts gallery is hosting a special exhibition of travel photographs by the inimitable Dylan Garcia, with a focus on The Wilderness of the Californian West. The exhibition will get underway on Saturday, April 19th 2014 and run through to Friday May 2nd, 2014.

The work of the talented photographer documents this interesting landscape from a different perspective to what most will be used to. While many think of Los Angeles and the glamour and sheen of Hollywood when passing their mind's eye over California, the state is much more diverse than this would suggest.

Indeed, the southern part of the state is submerged in desert, the Mojave, while the coastline along Big Sur is famed around the world for its beauty and drives along the winding motorway here are something of an American pastime.

Garcia's work is influenced by many disciplines, including films, books and photographs, as well as the natural geography of his terrain and this history of this important area.

Specifically, The Wilderness of the Californian West seeks to identify how we view these sparse landscapes and the ways that these perceptions are coloured by photography from the likes of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and, of course, the films of Hollywood.

Over the course of his career, Garcia has amassed a photolog of some of the most interesting places in the world, taking in sites as varied as ski tobogganing along Finland's frozen plains; sea lions basking in the sun on the shore of Fernandina Island, Galapagos; and congregations of the Masai Mara tribe in Kenya.

His images have been used in a number of books and magazines, as well as newspaper and online features. He has also hosted and contributed to numerous exhibitions.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801705745-ADNFCR
