Cycling Festival 'hoping for repeat performance'

The annual Isle of Wight Cycling Festival was hailed as a considerable success last year, after the event helped to raise more than £40,000 for local charities.

With this in mind, organisers are hoping the festival will prove to be just as popular in 2013 and will continue to draw in the crowds - and the sponsorship money.

Supporting an array of good causes - including Myeloma UK, Sq2Sq Appeal, The Woodland Trust, Heartbeat House, Pop N Grow, Gift to Nature, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and the Earl Mountbatten Hospice - the Cycling Festival is set to take place from September 14th to 29th.

Made up of Cycle the Wight - a 70-mile endurance ride across the island - and the Wightlink Wight Challenge, 2013 will be the tenth year of the festival and organisers are keen to see as many - if not more - people heading along in 2013.

Almost 500 individuals took part in the festivities last year, while more than 10,000 spectators were in attendance to cheer on the racers.

Councillor David Pugh, leader of the Isle of Wight Council, said: "The cycling festival is a very popular event attracting thousands of cyclists to the Island to enjoy our varied cycling terrain and stunning scenery each year.

"I am delighted that it is playing a part in supporting local and national charities and would like to thank everyone who has contributed."

The news follows the announcement that the annual Walk the Wight event is set to return in 2013, with the event helping to raise much-needed funds for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

Organisers will be offering two routes this year - a 26.5-mile trail from Bembridge to Alum Bay and a second 14-mile route from Sandown to Side, Newport. Set to take place on May 12th, it promises to be a great day out for all the family, with tours catering for all levels of fitness.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801562814-ADNFCR
