Thousands call for Isle of Wight road to be saved

Thousands of people are campaigning for a road on the Isle of Wight to be saved.

The Military Road is under threat of falling into the sea because of erosion, with parts of the road just feet from the edge of the cliff.

Campaigners state that money from the Isle of Wight Council's £300 million funding for the upkeep of roads should be used to save Military Road, but the council says that cash cannot be used for that purpose, BBC News reports.

Edward Giles, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for environment and transport, explained that the matter is complicated, because the piece of land most affected by the coastal erosion is owned by the National Trust.

He said: "There are a great deal of difficulties in diverting the road because of the various conservation designations which affect the land."

Earlier this year, the council spent £1 million on repairs to fix damage caused to the Isle of Wight's roads during the cold winter.
