Steve Harley: Isle of Wight has special aura

The Isle of Wight has been described as having a special aura by an act who is performing on the island this summer.

Pop icon Steve Harley stated he used to take Isle of Wight holidays with his family when he was a young boy and remembers heading to tourist spots such as Ryde during the trips.

Speaking to the Isle of Wight County Press, the original Cockney Rebel stated he is looking forward to returning to the island to perform at the Isle of Arts event later in the month.

Harley is likely to be playing tracks such as his number one hit Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me) at the show, which is going to be one of the highlights of the festival, which he said sounds "interesting".

"I will perform our three-man acoustic show, which is something I absolutely love doing. I love the island and people. It has its own special aura about it," he told the newspaper.

The star added he used to go on Isle of Wight caravan holidays when he was a kid and holds special memories of watching ships on the Solent "and the vast beaches when the tides were out - images that have stayed with me".

"To a kid, it was an amazing sight," he noted, pointing out he was back on the island to attend the Isle of Wight Festival in 1969 and 1970, the latter of which was one of the last public appearances by guitarist Jimi Hendrix ahead of his death.

"I regret missing Jimi Hendrix's blues set at Afton. It was on at around 03:00 BST and I was asleep, camping at what was called Desolation Row," recalled Harley, who added he will be joined by Cockney Rebel bandmates Barry Wickens on violin and guitar and James Lascelles on piano and percussion for the Isle of Arts gig.
