Sports facilities improved on the Isle of Wight

A number of sporting facilities at venues across the Isle of Wight are being updated and this has led to an increase in demand among locals and visitors alike for this type of service.

Refurbishment of The Heights in Sandown has resulted in a significant rise in the number of people visiting the centre over recent months, while the construction of a new gym at Westridge Leisure Centre in Ryde is also proving a popular destination for sports fans.

John Metcalfe, Isle of Wight Council deputy director for economy and environment, said: "It is very pleasing to see the public embracing the new facilities ... and I am sure the number of memberships will increase even more once the first phase of refurbishment ... is completed."

Last month, the annual Solent Swim was confirmed, which saw 64 brave souls taking to the icy waters of the Solent to raise funds for the West Wight Sports Centre last year.

Those taking part raised £30,000 in 2012, but the organisers are keen to exceed this target in 2013, with the swim to take place on August 13th.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801520209-ADNFCR
