See Carisbrooke donkeys on Isle of Wight holidays

Parents of animal-loving children could book Isle of Wight holidays in order to take their families to see the famous donkeys of Carisbrooke Castle.

Isle of Wight Council has highlighted a trip to the historic site as an ideal half-term event due to the presence of the animals, which reside at the castle and help to draw water in the well-house.

Demonstrations are held on the hour from 11:00 GMT each day, allowing visitors to witness the donkeys operating the authentic 16th century tread wheel.

The animals are among a number of attractions for tourists at Carisbrooke Castle, which is best known as the site where King Charles I was incarcerated after the Civil War.

Indeed, this piece of historical trivia is partially embodied by the Carisbrooke donkeys themselves - each animal's name begins with the letter J, in honour of the initial that the imprisoned monarch used to use when writing letters and planning his escape.
