See Brian Marriot exhibition on Isle of Wight

Art lovers taking Isle of Wight holidays over the coming months might be interested in an upcoming exhibition of Brian Marriot's impressive glass-work at Quarr Abbey, a scenic monastery near the town of Ryde.

Taking place from December 13th to 18th, the showing displays pieces created using recycled bits of glass from the internationally famous Isle of Wight Studio Glass, a workshop known for its innovative approach to the material.

While Marriot started his career as a designer and craftsman, he has moved into visual art and feels the two different skill-sets complement each other well.

"My unique pictures have evolved as a direct development of my design skills, combining an understanding of composition and visual presentation to create vibrant sculptural images," said the artist.

Born on the Isle of Wight, Marriot graduated from Portsmouth Art College in 1970 and has worked on the island for most of his life, generally in the creative industries.

His artworks are inspired by the varied and beautiful scenery that can be seen in the region, focusing on abstract representations of the coast and landscapes, he explained.

The pieces on show at Quarr Abbey include a series made to celebrate international sailing in 2012, as well as 31 other miscellaneous works, all of which will be for sale.

Visitors to the monastery will also be able to enjoy the historic architecture and impressive grounds, which host a small group of Benedictine monks.

The old abbey, founded in 1132, was the centre of life on the island until its dissolution by Henry VIII - the current site was settled in 1907, although the ruins of the first building remain.

Tours can be booked online, offering an overview of the area's interesting past as well as full visits to the pilgrim chapel and the church.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801505534-ADNFCR
