Secrets of Isle of Wight nuclear bunker revealed

The secret past of a bunker which was built on the Isle of Wight as a haven should nuclear war break out has been revealed.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, the facility was constructed in the 1950s and housed kitchens, prison cells and hospital wards.

A source told the local news source that he and fellow retained firemen were shown the St Boniface bunker after signing the Official Secrets Act and promising not to tell even their loved ones about its existence.

"One of the walls parted like something from a science fiction film and revealed a road which went below ground and was wide enough to take an ambulance," he said.

The man added that he kept his promise and did not even tell his wife what he had seen, but said he would not have left his family to go into the bunker if war had broken out.

There are many war memorials on the Isle of Wight, including at Niton, Ventnor, Lake and Shanklin.
