Scarecrow Festival to delight tourists

If you only go to the Isle of Wight once this year, make sure it's during the utterly brilliant and very funny Scarecrow Festival, which is taking place at the towns of Gatcombe and Chillerton this May.

The week-long event has previously received huge press attention thanks to the incredible standard that has been set with the so-called 'exhibitions'.

It's an incredibly simple premise and one that involves all the residents of these little communities, inspiring them to go above and beyond what has been achieved previously.

Either individually or in groups, the islanders are asked to put together the most inventive and artistic scarecrows that they can. Upon assembly, the scarecrows are then positioned throughout the town, giving residents and tourists something to smile about.

Last year saw 90 different creations entered into the competition, with a truly terrifying skeletal depiction of a pirate by Frank and Candice Quinton eventually scaring the judges and the crows into giving them the first prize.

An accurate depiction of Scooby Doo and Shaggy - probably more likely to be scared by the crows than actually doing any scaring himself - was runner up, while a Pied Piper secured third prize.

Judges last year included Lucy Morgan and Matt White from Isle of Wight radio, and while there's no telling who will be deciding this year's event, you can bet they'll know their scarecrows.

For tourists, photographers and those interested in an event quite different from anywhere else in the UK, this seven-day spectacular is genuinely something to behold. It's held from May 25th until June 2nd, so book your ferry tickets now.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801704417-ADNFCR
