Sailing events on the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is renowned as one of the best sailing destinations in the world and as a result, there are plenty of nautical attractions to entice avid sailing enthusiasts over the coming months.

The longest standing and one of the largest boating regattas in the world is to be held on the island in the coming months, with the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week recognised as a world-class event.

Up to 8,500 competitors and more than 100,000 spectators will descend on Cowes from August 3rd to 10th, with visitors being treated to the spectacle of  live racing in the Solent, as well as an array of land-based attractions and fairs to have sailing enthusiasts champing at the bit.

Founded in 1826, Cowes Week has become a mammoth spectacle for fans of all things sailing, with the docks bustling with an array of vessels from across the globe for the duration of the festival.

It is organised by Cowes Combined Clubs and will see more than 40 races taking place each day. Anyone wishing to take part is welcome to do so, but they must submit details of themselves, their vessel and any classes they wish to compete in as soon as they can, as places continue to fill up quickly. However, there is no deadline for entry until the event actually gets underway.

Alternatively, visitors to the island can simply head along to the many viewing areas set up in and around Cowes and simply soak up the wonderful atmosphere and experience of being at Cowes Week.

Meanwhile, the Little Britain Challenge Cup is another fantastic nautical event taking place on the island in the near future.

Running from September 12th to 15th, it will see five races in all spread across the four-day festival, while visitors will also be able to enjoy, as well as the Regatta racing a silent auction is to be held on the Friday (September 12th) where individuals will be able to bid on a range of items.

Guests will also be able to head along to the annual Saturday Gala Dinner, where they will be treated to a fantastic meal and offered the chance to support a number of good causes from the local area.

A champagne breakfast is to be served on the closure day of the nautical festival at the event centre, giving entrants and sailing enthusiasts a chance to bid a fond farewell to the event for another year.

Entertainment throughout the regatta will also include live bands and dancing each evening.

One of the biggest sporting spectacles on the Isle of Wight also recently took place in the form of the annual JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race.

It took place on June 1st and saw more than 16,000 sailors battling to be crowned the fastest to circumnavigate the island in a range of classes.

Winners this year included victory for Sir Ben Ainslie aboard JP Morgan BAR - setting a new course record and shaving ten minutes off the previous best time that was set back in 2008.

Jasper Berens, head of JP Morgan Assert Management in the UK, commented: "It was a vintage year in terms of weather and the racing and it was incredible to see so many happy, smiling faces in Cowes.

"The fact that Ben and his team on JP Morgan BAR achieved the Round the Island race multihull record just topped it off. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year."

In 2014, the race has already been scheduled to take place on June 21st.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801606047-ADNFCR
