RORC sailing events announced for 2014

The Isle of Wight is well known as one of the UK’s top sailing destinations and fans of the sport can now start to plan trips to see some of the world’s best yachting contests.

At the end of November, the dates of several of the key events in the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s (RORC’s) calendar were revealed, with Cowes playing host to four of the six competitions that have so far been announced.

The first of these is the Easter Challenge, which will take place on April 18th to 20th 2014, and is designed as a training event to help teams hone their skills before the sailing season begins in earnest.

From June 13th to 15th the next big RORC event will head to the island - the IRC National Championship. This sees teams from around Europe competing in what’s considered to be the most competitive IRC championship on the planet.

July 19th to 26th will see the Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup take centre stage, with international, amateur teams battling it out on the waves. The Isle of Wight’s final RORC event of the summer will be the start of the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race.

This contest is particularly gruelling, with 30 yachts setting off in the 1,802 nautical-mile race. The beginning of the competition will come at the end of the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, another of the island’s top sailing events.

Of course, there will be several other sailing events taking place in Cowes during 2014, including the JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race (in June) and the aforementioned Cowes Week.

Getting to Cowes from the mainland is easy thanks to the regular ferry services that run to the harbour town. Yachting fans can therefore be in the thick of the action and enjoy watching the races from the island, as well as have the chance to explore Cowes and its delightful shops, cafes and restaurants.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801668226-ADNFCR
