Restoration project to return fish to Isle of Wight river

Work is underway to bring fish back to an Isle of Wight river in a major restoration project.

Claire Hector, Newport Rivers co-ordinator at Natural Enterprise, stated that the scheme on the Medina in Newport should not be disruptive to people in the area.

Speaking to the Isle of Wight County Press, she said: "Hopefully they’ll find watching the progress of the restoration interesting."

Over the next two years, the river is going to be prepared to become the home of rare species such as sea trout and European eels.

Bank stabilisation is set to make up a large part of the project, along with installing rock rolls, berms and woody debris.

Natural Enterprise has already started work on the scheme between the weirs near Matalan to Blackwater.

According to the Royal Yachting Association, the Medina offers a great selection of waterside pubs for those who take the time to cruise up and down it on an Isle of Wight holiday.
