Rare plant found growing on Isle of Wight

Horticulturists may be tempted to book Isle of Wight holidays after a rare plant was discovered to be growing on the island.

The Yucca schidigera, which also goes by the names of the Spanish Dagger or the Mojave Yucca, has flowered for the first time at Ventnor Botanic Garden.

It is native to the Mojave Desert in California and grows to as high as five metres in height, while hundreds of white night scented flowers will sprout out of the head, which itself can be one metre tall.

Chris Kidd, head gardener at Ventnor Botanic Garden, stated that those who want to see the plant blooming will have to book Isle of Wight holidays quickly in order to do so.

"The plant was used by native Americans to make soap, while its seeds could be ground into flour," he said.

"It is a very exciting and stunning plant to view, not to mention being very photogenic."

Ventnor Botanic Garden is open until the end of October and is free to enter.
