Plans agreed to conserve IoW heritage

Council officials and representatives of the National Archives have come to an agreement over improvements to the grade II-listed Guildhall in Newport, which will in the future protect and exhibit much of the island's heritage.

Visitors to the Isle of Wight (IoW) will be able to enjoy an improved museum showcasing the island's rich cultural heritage under the new plans, while the building will also provide a fitting home for the new County Records office.

A letter from the National Archives read following the council meeting: "The Guildhall site under consideration offers some significant advantages in terms of raising the profile and increasing audiences, as well as having the potential to provide appropriate facilities for the preservation of the island's records."

Announced back in December, the Guildhall is currently undergoing a £7 million revamp, with the property to become a major focal point for IoW tourism in the future.

Cabinet member for heritage councillor Dave Stewart noted at the time that the project will be of major benefit to the whole community in the coming years.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801561958-ADNFCR
