Newport FC supporters to safeguard clubs future

Isle of Wight football team Newport FC could have its ground sold to Asda, but the supporter-owned organisation has pledged to place the future of the club at the centre of all negotiations.

Supermarket giant Tesco has submitted plans for the development of a new store next to the club's ground, but stadium owners South Coast Leisure hope to entice Asda to buy St George's Park and build a bigger shop there.

It would use £1 million from the deal to relocate the club to a new site.

Newport FC Supporters' Club Trust, which owns the football club, told the Isle of Wight County Press that if the club has to move its financial security will be the main concern.

"Since the trust took ownership of the club, it has constantly strived to make sure the club’s future is secured through its own people. As majority shareholders, we feel it is vital for fans to have a voice," the organisation declared.

The football team has performed well on the pitch this season and the owners hope to reflect this success in the boardroom, it added.

"As we enter 2013 and celebrate our 125th anniversary, we encourage you to continue to support the club in any way you can."

Newport have played at St George's Park for a quarter of a century, with the record attendance for a home game 3,112. This was recorded against Portsmouth FC during a pre-season fixture in 2007.

The club - founder members of the Isle of Wight League - won the championship four times before joining the Hampshire League in 1927. It now plays in the Wessex League Premier Division.

Key players for the team include powerful midfielder Joe Rayner, Isle of Wight international Darren Powell and talented centre-forward Tom McInnes. They are currently sixth in the division.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801515980-ADNFCR
