New dinosaurs roaming Blackgang Chine

New dinosaurs roaming Blackgang Chine

One of the Isle of Wight's most popular attractions has made some new additions for the 2014 season - a horde of animatronic dinosaurs!

Blackgang Chine near Ventnor has been home to a family of the extinct lizards since 1972, when BBC's 'Blue Peter' programme was there to film them being lowered into place by helicopter.

Although these static models developed something of a cult following, appearing in thousands of holiday snaps over the years, the owners of the amusement park decided that the attraction needed updating for 2014.

"People's expectations are continually evolving and we have to not just keep pace with that, we have to get ahead of that," managing director Alec Dabell told the BBC.

"And we believe with our new dinosaurs, we've managed to do that."

So as of this week, visitors to Blackgang Chine are able to step into "Restricted Area 5" for a 'Jurassic Park' style experience and come face to face with the country's largest animatronic T-Rex and his fellow dinosaurs.

However, nostalgic fans of the original models should not fear because several of these have found a place alongside their more nimble replacements.

Other attractions at the theme park - the UK's oldest - include a water slide, a cliff-edge rollercoaster, the Crooked House, Pirate Cove and Nurseryland.

Last year, Blackgang Chine, which opened way back in 1843, celebrated its 170th birthday. It is still run by the same family that created the park - the Dabells - and the first-ever attraction, the skeleton of a whale, is still on show today.

The historic park opens at 10am throughout the year, although closing times vary. Tickets cost from £14.95 for those age four and above, £55 for groups of four and £12.95 for OAPs and the disabled. Under fours go free.

If you're on the island for a few days, save some money by purchasing a combination ticket that also includes the Robin Hill Adventure Park & Gardens. ADNFCR-3083-ID-801709194-ADNFCR
