New apes join island sanctuary

The Isle of Wight Owl and Monkey Haven in Newport has six new lodgers, after a group of Barbary macaques were transported from a Netherlands rescue home to the island charity.

All six were victims of the illegal pet trade and were introduced to their new home last month, reports the Isle of Wight Country Press.

Kelly Wickes, of the sanctuary, said: "We are so excited by this. It has taken around a year to get everything ready. A team from the Netherlands were here for a few days to help them settle in."

Monkey Haven owner Don Waler pointed out that these animals, having been domesticated to some extent, would no longer be able to survive in the wild.

The multi-award winning charity is also a major tourist attraction - while it might be some time before visitors are able to see the macaques, who will need to recuperate following their traumatic travel experience, there are plenty of other primates on show.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801696296-ADNFCR
