Mountain bike facility to open on Isle of Wight

Tourists who like to spend a lot of their time on two wheels may be tempted to book Isle of Wight holidays after it was revealed the island is set to open a major new facility.

According to the Isle of Wight Council, the site is to be located at Cheverton Farm near Shorwell and builds on the trails that were created for the Island Games that were held last summer.

Keen cyclists have mucked in with the work and helped to build three miles of downhill and singletrack at the location, which is sure to be a big draw for mountain biking enthusiasts.

Organisations such as the NHS, Cycle Wight, CTC, British Cycling and Natural England have all been involved in the project, a statement from the local authority said.

The Isle of Wight Mountain Bike Centre will be open during the summer months only - from April to October - and a subscription will be payable to use the facility.

In order to mark the launch of the facility, a special event is set to be held on Sunday (April 28th), with a six-hour endurance event scheduled to take place on the day.

Cyclists will work in teams for the competition, which has been compared to the famous 24-hour Le Mans race, while many of the tracks at the centre will be used when the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival begins this September.

Andrew Hodgeson of Cheverton Farm said: "Following the success of the Island Games mountain bike event that we hosted on the farm last year, I realised the potential for a permanent track making the most of our hilly farmland that makes this beautiful part of the island so popular for cycling."

This year, the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival will run from September 22nd to 30th, with hundreds of people expected to travel to the island to take part in the event.
