Johnny Depp 'has bought Isle of Wight house'

Hollywood star Johnny Depp is reported to have bought a home on the Isle of Wight.

The Alice in Wonderland star has been spotted on the island on a number of occasions this year, but there was speculation a sighting earlier in the summer may have been a lookalike.

According to the Isle of Wight County Press, a spokesperson for the Hambrough Hotel in Ventnor, where Depp is supposed to have stayed, refused to comment on the rumours.

But chef Robert Thompson told the Weekend magazine in the Times that Depp heading to the island will help to change the perception people have of the Isle of Wight.

"We want to change the Isle of Wight. People still think coming here is like stepping back in time. But it's up-and-coming. Johnny Depp just bought a place in Bonchurch," he was quoted as saying.

Thompson was recently named in the top 100 Hardens guide, cementing his place as one of the UK's most exciting young cooks, while the Hambrough has also won 28th spot in Square Meal BMW Awards, featured in the AA's Notable Wine List and been included in the AA's Critics' Choice 2012 this year.

There has been months of speculation regarding Depp's activity on the Isle of Wight and he has long been rumoured to have purchased a property on the island.

Resident Danielle Parker-Meadows told the County Press earlier in the year that the Edward Scissorhands star was spotted in Shanklin with another man and a woman and a couple of children, one of whom was asleep on his shoulder.

If Depp is set to become an Isle of Wight resident, he could join fellow actors Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson who have been reported to be on the hunt for a holiday home.

The pair of stars of the Twilight series of movies have often been spotted on the island and spent New Year on the Isle of Wight last year.
