January ideal for squirrel spotting on Isle of Wight

Wildlife lovers could be booking Isle of Wight holidays as January is an ideal time to spot squirrels on the island.

According to islandbreaks.co.uk, the red squirrel is a must-see for anyone interested in animals heading to the Isle of Wight for a break over the next few weeks.

It pointed out that this is because almost ten per cent of the island is woodland and as there are no grey squirrels on the island, their red cousins are able to roam freely.

"The squirrel's fine fur coat is the most regally red winter garb to be seen - a dream scenario for wildlife photographers," added the website.

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays were advised to head to the ancient woodland at Borthwood, where the National Trust has set up a mile-long squirrel trail.

Squirrels are able to live for up to six years in the wild, the Wight Squirrel Project claims, while the animals can be left or right-handed.
