Isle of Wight's beaches 'best in the UK'

Beaches on the Isle of Wight have won fourteen awards, meaning the island has the best sandy coastlines in the UK.

This year's Keep Britain Tidy Blue Flag and Quality Coast Awards (QCAs) named fourteen Isle of Wight beaches as being among the best in the country.

Beaches at Ventnor, Sandown and Shanklin have been named Blue Flag beaches, while several others won QCAs.

Those include the beaches at Colwell, Cowes and Gurnard, along with stretches of sand at Springvale and Yaverland.

As only 111 QCAs were handed out, almost ten per cent of the UK's best beaches can be found on the island.

Isle of Wight Council cabinet member responsible for tourism George Brown said: "We have stunning award-winning beaches, vast areas of outstanding natural beauty and many famous events and attractions."

Shanklin is the newest island beach to win a QCA and people on Isle of Wight holidays who want to visit it can also go to the coastal resort's Old Village area during their break. ADNFCR-3083-ID-19775278-ADNFCR
