Isle of Wight tourist spot 'entering new era'

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays may wish to head to a location on the island that is said to be entering a new era after its ownership changed hands.

Ventnor Botanic Garden has been one of the most popular places on the island for many years, but the Isle of Wight Council had to sell it due to the fact it could no longer afford to run it.

Operations at the site are now handled by a community interest company (CIC), which claims it is going to put any profits it earns through the venture back into the gardens.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, a deal has been agreed for CIC to lease the 29-acres of garden for 125 years from the local authority.

CIC director John Curtis is said to be enthusiastic about the future of Ventnor Botanic Garden, which had been facing closure due to the Isle of Wight's Council's wish to pass it on.

Royal Botanic Gardens and Kew are among the locations Mr Curtis has promised to use as an inspiration when planning the future of the popular Ventnor tourist location.

Phil Le May, who will sit on the CIC board, stated the takeover from the local authority will allow the gardens to reach a whole new level, adding: "There is a lot of genuine love and pent-up enthusiasm for the garden which is just waiting to be unleashed."

He highlighted the fact that it has been a "hard slog" over the course of the last few years as people fought to keep the venue alive.

The Friends of the Ventnor Botanic Garden have teamed up with the CIC to mark the 40th anniversary of the opening of the location with a special guided walk later in the month.

VentnorBlog reports that tickets for the June 21st event are priced at £10 and entertainment is going to be provided by the Shanklin Town Brass Band.
