Isle of Wight theatre plans revealed

The Isle of Wight Council has revealed Ryde Theatre is set to reopen as an entertainment venue after its sale to an entertainment company was confirmed.

Plans to sell the location were revealed earlier in the summer and the terms of the arrangements have now been released in a delegated decision report published today (September 19th).

The Isle of Wight Council is set to receive £400,000 from the sale of Ryde Theatre, which was put on the market for the second time towards the end of last year.

Proposals to turn the venue into a music college had fallen through and the local authority decided to make it available for sale once more.

The new owners are planning to reopen the venue as a theatre and live entertainment space, while the firm has announced it is also going to retain and operate the Lind Street public toilets at their expense under the terms of the deal with the Isle of Wight Council.

Public access to the historic 1897 organ inside Ryde Theatre, which was installed to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, is also going to be retained.

The terms of the sale of the grade II listed building do not stipulate that it must be used as a live entertainment and theatre venue, the bid that has been accepted includes this pledge.

It was added by the Isle of Wight Council that the local authority is going to retain responsibility for the war memorial incorporated into the frontage of the theatre building.

The history of the building dates back almost 200 years, although it did not become Ryde Theatre until March 1991, according to the Theatres Trust.

Nigel Hayton was the architect in charge of the renovation of the location, which saw the addition of facilities including dressing rooms and the installation of sound, light and projection equipment.
