Isle of Wight sustainability project launched

The Isle of Wight is bidding for a major sustainability project to be given the green light in the House of Commons later today (November 15th).

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, around 200 delegates from the island are travelling to London in order to attend Ecoisland's Global Launch event at Westminster.

A bus left the Isle of Wight in the early hours of the morning to carry the residents to the House of Commons, where they will learn about the plans to integrate the island's future wind, tidal, geothermal and solar power.

David Green, Ecoisland CIC chief executive, said: "Ecoisland is the largest single sustainability project in the UK and the most successful working example of the Big Society in action - a concept launched by the prime minister, David Cameron, in July 2010."

Government minister Oliver Letwin is set to be the keynote speaker at today's Ecoisland event.

He will detail how Ecoisland will be working with global partners IBM and Toshiba in order to deliver the success of the project on the Isle of Wight.

One of the key ingredients in the Isle of Wight's proposal to become reliant on renewable energy is the installation of a new smart grid initiative.

Duncan Turner, environmental manager for Bestival, recently stated the organisers of the popular Isle of Wight festival are looking into ways to power the bash through renewable energy in 2012.

He explained solar power, pedal power and local biofuel could all be used to replace diesel usage at the festival, which is set to take place in September next year.

Mr Turner added the boutique bash - which this year boasted a line-up including names such as The Cure and Bjork among its top acts - takes sustainability very seriously.
