Isle of Wight show to play host to Grand Prix race boats

People heading off on Isle of Wight holidays in May could find they are able to catch a glimpse of two boats that are to take part in the Cowes to Monte Carlo Offshore Powerboat Grand Prix.

Ribex 2011, which is taking place at Cowes Yacht Haven between May 13th and 15th, will be playing host to the vessels - one 30ft and the other 36ft - before they are used in the gruelling challenge that begins in June 2013, the Isle of Wight Chronicle reports.

Hugo Montgomery-Swan, organiser of Ribex, said it is a huge coup to have the race exhibited at the event, adding the Grand Prix contest is one of the most difficult in the world.

He observed: "There is no tougher [race] - and visitors to Ribex will be able to get a true picture of the challenge that lies ahead by seeing these boats right in front of them."

The Isle of Wight County Press recently reported that Dame Ellen MacArthur is to open a new marina based at Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club.
