Isle of Wight revealed on Olympic flame route

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays may be able to see the Olympic flame after the island was revealed to be on the planned route ahead of the Games taking place in London next year.

The announcement follows negotiations that spanned a year between the Isle of Wight Council and the London Olympic Organising Committee.

It has now been unveiled on the route, with the flame arriving in Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight on July 14th.

Some 40 different people will carry the flame while it is on the Isle of Wight and it is scheduled to pass through locations including Totland, Yarmouth, the Needles, Gunville, Carisbrooke, Newport and East Cowes during its time on the island before returning to the mainland.

Councillor George Brown, the council's cabinet member for the economy and the environment, stated that it will be a day to remember for locals and tourists on Isle of Wight holidays and revealed he is delighted to have secure the island's place on the flame's route.

"This could be a once in a lifetime moment to view the torch on our own island and I know the local community will turn out in large numbers to welcome and cheer on the bearers next summer," he said.

Lee Matthews from the council, who played a vital role in the negotiations to bring the flame to the Isle of Wight, added that while there was initial confusion regarding the island after it was missed out on the original announcement, this was due to the fact that the final schedule was yet to be confirmed.

In May, John Metcalfe, Isle of Wight Council deputy director for economy, tourism and leisure, confirmed that talks were ongoing with the organisers of the Olympics to ensure the Isle of Wight was on the list of locations to be visited along the flame's route ahead of the start of the Games.
