Isle of Wight railway hailed as UK's quaintest

A new list of the best railways in the UK features an eight-mile trip on the Isle of Wight as one of its top ten recommendations.

Leading railway writer Michael Williams stated that the Islandline journey, which goes through countryside between Ryde and Shanklin, is the "quaintest" in the country.

"What can be more surreal than to travel on a red-painted, 70-year-old ex-London Transport tube train through rolling fields and past pretty seaside villages of the Isle of Wight?" he was quoted as saying by the Isle of Wight County Press.

Mr Williams added that the railway on the Isle of Wight should be considered every bit as much a part of the national network as lines to Victoria and Waterloo in London.

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays can also enjoy a trip on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, which is hosting a series of special events over the Easter weekend.
