Isle of Wight park wins national award

An Isle of Wight park has won a national prize after it was handed a Green Flag award for the fifth year in a row.

Appley Park in Ryde - which is run by the Isle of Wight Council - is one of the most popular locations on the island for tourists due to the wide range of activities available within the site.

George Brown, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member responsible for the environment, highlighted the fact that parks have to meet strict criteria in order to be selected for the Green Flag award, which is operated by Keep Britain Tidy.

These include having good and safe access, being clean and well maintained, having provisions for public amenities such as drinking water and toilets, while there must also be regular promotion of the park.

"It is credit to the staff who work in our parks and countryside that Appley has once again been given this prestigious recognition," said Mr Brown, who also pointed out there has been a rise in the number of people using the park over the course of the last 12 months.

A ceremony will be held at Appley Park in Ryde tomorrow (July 18th) to mark the raising of the 2012 Green Flag at the location.

Mr Brown noted the park is popular both among local residents and those on Isle of Wight holidays and its history dates back for more than two centuries.

He added: "It is very important we maintain our green spaces for the public to enjoy for many more years."

Appley Park in Ryde was among the Isle of Wight locations to have hosted special events to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee earlier in the year.

It hosted a 50s-themed party with traditional games and entertainment to transport visitors back to the time of the monarch's coronation.
