Isle of Wight 'one of butterfly's last homes'

The Isle of Wight is one of the last places in the UK people can see a certain type of butterfly.

According to a report by BBC News, an area no larger than 500 square kilometres on the island is one of the few destinations in the country where the Endangered Glanville fritillary can be spotted.

It noted that as so few of the butterflies remain, the species has been listed on the charity Butterfly Conservation's Red List of endangered creatures.

Butterflies are famous for being short-lived, with a lifespan of less than a year, the news provider added.

People interested in butterflies can check out Butterfly and Fountain World during their Isle of Wight holiday, with the attraction located on Staplers Road in Newport and boasting hundreds of the creatures flying freely in a natural environment.

It is open from the Easter weekend through until the end of October each year, with a cafe available at the site.
