Isle of Wight Olympic torch route revealed

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays may be able to see the Olympic torch during their time on the island after it was revealed when the flame will be travelling to the location.

The Olympics get underway in London on July 27th, but before that the torch is going on a tour of the UK, with the organisers of the event claiming it will pass close to the vast majority of people.

It is set to arrive on the Isle of Wight on the afternoon of July 14th, making it one of the last destinations to see the torch before it heads to the Olympic Stadium.

The flame will go to the Needles and travel down the chairlift at the popular tourist location before making its way to Yarmouth.

According to the Isle of Wight Council, "the torch will be carried through the town, going through Quay Street, Pier Street, the High Street, Baskett's Lane, Tennyson Road and The Mount".

It will then be carried along Carisbrooke High Street, on through Newport town centre and along Fairlee Road to Medina College, which will be hosting the Isle of Wight Primary School Games on the day.

Osborne House - the former holiday home of Queen Victoria - will also be playing host to the torch over the course of the day before it makes its way to Red Funnel's vehicle yard, where it will board the ferry to leave the island and return to the mainland for the final part of its UK tour.

The Olympics organisers will reveal the island's torchbearers closer to the time, it was noted by the local authority.

London will host the Olympic Games - the third time it has done so - from July 27th to August 12th, while the Paralympics are scheduled to run from August 29th to September 9th.
