Isle of Wight MP: Olympic torch will come to island

The Olympic torch is set to tour the Isle of Wight as part of a planned route around the UK before the London 2012 Games.

Andrew Turner, MP for the Isle of Wight, revealed that he has received assurances there will be an announcement regarding the island's addition to the tour in the near future.

"I am very pleased to be able to let islanders know that we will all have the opportunity to see the Olympic torch on the island," he added.

The Isle of Wight is not on the initial list of venues set to host celebrations to mark the Olympic torch passing through as it goes around the UK in the build-up to the Games.

Earlier in the week, John Metcalfe, Isle of Wight Council deputy director for economy, tourism and leisure, stated he was in discussions with the Olympic committee regarding the island being added to the route that the torch is set to take next summer.
